Our Curriculum

At Draycott and Rodney Stoke First School we follow the National Primary Curriculum, if you click on the link below it will take you to the website where you can read about the national curriculum primary programmes of study and attainment targets for key stages 1 and 2.


As in other state schools, all children over the age of five follow The National Curriculum. This means they follow nationally agreed programmes of study in literacy; numeracy; science; history; geography; art, design and technology; music; physical education (PE); religious education (RE); and information and communication technology (ICT). In addition to the subjects specified in the National Curriculum, our school curriculum also includes French; personal, social and health education; environmental education; equal opportunities and multicultural education.


The school is organised into classes, with children spending much of their time with their own class teacher. Because we have three classes covering five school years, it will be necessary for your child to spend more than one year in the same class. This does not mean your child will repeat a year. S/he will follow a programme of study suited to age and ability.


Sometimes it may be necessary to split a year group to enable us to work with classes of a reasonable size (especially in the younger age group). Where this is necessary, the division will be based on age, to keep children of a similar age together.

Because of the wide range of age and ability in each class, we organise the children into flexible groupings to allow each child to make progress. Sometimes children will be grouped with others of similar abilities in other classes, or with a learning support assistant.


Planning for these subjects is arranged in a two-year cycle. Some of the work is taught as topics, which may last for a term. Other work, especially in numeracy and literacy, is taught daily. We often arrange focus weeks, during which all the children in the school explore a special topic.


We use first-hand experiences and practical activities to build on what children know, nurturing their natural curiosity and enthusiasm.
